African Blackwood
Found in central and southern regions of Africa, this wood is characterized by it's nearly completely black heartwood, and thin pale yellow sapwood. The tree tends to be very small, oddly shaped, and grows very slowly making this a very expensive wood.
Black & White Ebony
Sourced from Laos and Southeast Asia, this is a rare wood characterized by the intermingling of black and white variegations. This contrast makes for very striking finished pieces. It is also not readily available, making this a very expensive wood.
Bloodwood
Found in tropical South America, the heartwood is a very vivid red colour with a pale yellow sapwood. This wood is more readily available, making prices moderate to moderately high.
Bocote
Bocote wood is found in Mexico, South America, and Central America. Characterized by its lighter brown body and dark brown to black stripes, the grain pattern of this wood is very striking and it is common to see "eye" patterns in finished products. This is a fairly expensive exotic hardwood.
Burl Maple
Caused by a growth on the maple tree which forms many knots and an interesting pattern when turned.
Chakte-Kok
Distributed from southern Mexico to southern Brazil and Paraguay, colour of this wood varies in the intensity and hue from light pink, to bright watermelon red, to a darker brown red. The price of hardwood for Chakte-Kok is on the medium to high side.
Cocobolo
Found in Central America, Cocobolo comes in a myriad of colours including yellow, orange, red, and shades of brown with black streaks. The sapwood tends to be pale yellow. This wood is limited and in high demand, therefore it is quite expensive.
Curly Maple
Located in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Named for the three dimensional chatoyant effect the ripples in the grain pattern in the wood have in the appearance of the final product. Prices range depending on the grade of the wood. However, it is considered to be a fairly economical wood.
Granadillo
Sourced from Central and South America, this wood is characterized by its variable heartwood colour, ranging from bright red to darker red often with darker stripes throughout. Prices are moderate for this wood.
Indian Ebony
Found in Southeast Asia, Indian Ebony has jet black heartwood, and can sometimes have grey or dark brown streaks with pale yellow sapwood. This wood is scarcely available today, making prices very high.
Indian Rosewood
This wood is found in India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. The heartwood is characterized by colours that vary from golden brown to deep purplish brown with dark brown streaks. Prices are generally high for imported rosewood.
Katalox
An exotic wood that is native to Southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The wood is a beautiful deep reddish brown to almost black with a pale yellow to white sapwood. It is also common to see curly or wavy grain in the pieces. Katalox prices tend to be in the mid to upper range.
Lacewood
Found in tropical South America, characterized by the flecking that makes the wood look like lace when finished. Prices vary depending on the species.
Marblewood
Native to Northeastern South America, and characterized by its yellow to golden brown colour with brown, purple, or black streaks. This exotic wood looks similar to Zebrawod and gets its name from the contrast between the body colour and darker streaks that occur through the wood making it appear like natural marble. Marblewood tends to be in the mid to upper range in pricing.
Mun Ebony
Located in Laos and Vietnam, this beautiful wood has a medium brown hue with dark brown to black streaks, and a pale yellow to white sapwood. This wood is incredibly dense so it turns and finished amazingly. This is an extremely expensive wood.
Olivewood
Distributed in Europe and Eastern Africa, this is a cream coloured wood with brown or black streaks throughout. Prices are very high for this wood.
Santos Rosewood
Found in Brazil, this wood is very varied in colour ranging from a red/orange to dark violet/brown with contrasting black streaks. Like the other rosewoods, it is very expensive.
Snakewood
Sourced from coastal regions of northeast South America, and named for its snakeskin grain patterns, the wood is typically reddish brown with darker brown to black patches with a naturally high lustre. This wood comes from a rare and small tree, and is therefore one of the most expensive exotic woods.
Verawood
Distributed in Central America and Northern South America, this is a beautifully contrasting wood with a heartwood colour that ranges from pale yellow to a deep forest green. This is a mid to upper range priced wood.
Walnut
A beautiful wood that ranges from a light brown to dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Figured grain pattern are also commonly seen in the wood. Typically a midrange priced wood as it is more widely available.
Wenge
Found in Central Africa, heartwood is a medium to dark brown with almost black streaks.Very beautiful wood that looks striking when finished. Prices are quite high for this wood.
Zebrawood
Sourced from Western Africa, the heartwood is a cream or light brown colour with dark blackish brown streaks that resemble zebra stripes. This is a fairly expensive exotic wood.
Ziricote
Found in Central America and Mexico, the colour in this wood ranges from medium to dark brown with darker bands mixed in causing this wood to have a very unique appearance. This wood is very expensive, reaching the cost of some of the types of ebony.
